BIPOC Maternal Health Forum: Reclaiming Our Time

April 29, 2023 @ 10:00 am - 2:00 pm

In the United States, BIPOC (Black and Indigenous People of Color) birthing persons are over 3.5 times more likely to die in childbirth than White birthing persons, and Black infant pre-term deliveries and deaths are the highest per capita than any other demographic group. Hosted by a coalition of Southern Arizona National Pan-Hellenic Council (historically Black) sororities and the YWCA of Southern Arizona, the 2023 BIPOC Maternal Health Forum: Reclaiming Our Time event happening April 29th, 2023 from 10am-2pm at the YWCA of Southern Arizona is designed to address these alarming disparities and to highlight ways to reclaim empowering maternal health practices.

Our incredible speakers will share their knowledge and experience in critical maternal health issues including research, policy, advocacy, practice, and cultural awareness particularly in BIPOC spaces. The Forum seeks to change the dominant cultural narrative and grow a network of stakeholders committed to improving maternal health outcomes for BIPOC while cultivating a space of respect and love centered on the experiences of BIPOC birthing persons and their families, birth workers, mental health professionals, and Arizona community leaders.

Donations of women’s professional clothing, accessories, and period products are welcome to support the YWCA’s Your Sister’s Closet and Project Period programs.

Our very own Sorors Sabrina Azemar Butler and Dr. Gayle Dean have served on the planning committee for this event and will be participating in the forum.
